Hurricane insurance is especially important in Houston and the Gulf Coast. Hurricane insurance is generally available with most homeowner’s insurance policies, though the coverage may come with separate deductibles in a named perils insurance policy and even in an open perils insurance policy.
Generally, a two percent deductible for hurricane insurance coverage is customary along the Gulf Coast in areas that are not covered by the Texas Windstorm Association. In, fact two percent is the lowest deductible that many insurance carriers offer in the Gulf Coast. Many insurance carriers, even well-known carriers, offer policies with five percent deductibles for hurricane coverage. A five percent deductible is generally too high for most insurance consumers. For example, if a policy covers a home for $200,000, a five percent deductible would reduce a potential insurance claim by $10,000.00. Even though a higher deductible will reduce the cost of the policy, consumers in the Gulf Coast should generally stick to lower insurance deductibles.
Along with selecting an experienced insurance professional when selecting hurricane insurance, consumers should consider all of the policy options, including the policy limits, whether the policy offers replacement cost or cash value, and additional options.
Some insurance policies offer certain coverage as a standard policy provision, while other insurance policies require an endorsement (a special selection/amendment) for that same coverage. Foundation coverage, accidental water coverage, water back up and pet liability are options about which consumers should inquire. Some insurance carriers offer these options only through endorsements, while other insurance carriers offer this coverage as a standard policy term. A consumer should consider these options when selecting the hurricane insurance option that best suits him or her.
A very important thing to understand is that hurricane insurance coverage will not cover flood with certain very limited exceptions. Flood insurance must be purchased as a separate policy, and a consumer should inquire about flood insurance when he or she selects the hurricane insurance.
In Sum: Along With Hurricane Insurance Consider:
- Deductibles
- The Form Of the Coverage (ACV vs Replacement Cost)
- Foundation Coverage
- Sudden and Accidental Water Coverage
- Water Back Up Coverage
- Flood Coverage and
- Special Liability Coverage
