Restaurant insurance is often composed of different types of coverage.  A restaurateur should consider general liability, property coverage, liquor liability (with assault and battery) commercial auto, and property coverage.

This short post briefly covers the following topics regarding Restaurant Insurance:

  • General Liability
  • Liquor Liability
  • Commercial Insurance for Property Coverage

General Liability

Restaurant-Insurance-Houston-General-LiabilityIn a restaurant context, general liability may be used to defend against suits regarding slips and falls or other damages that could occur to patrons. It could also apply to other injuries.  Commercial General Liability often covers “those sums that the insured becomes legally obligated to pay as damages because of bodily injury or property damage” to which the insurance applies.  Often, the policy will contain a duty to defend, which means that the insurer will pay the related legal bills as well.  In any case, general liability is an important part of a restaurateur’s coverage.  There are always exclusion, and liquor liability is designed to protect against a dram shop suit.  General liability typically does not cover injuries to restaurant employees, so you may wish to consider a separate policy to cover that risk.

Liquor Liability

Commercial Liquor Liability is an important part of Restaurant Insurance

Years back, Texas passed dram shop legislation, meaning that restaurants and bars who over-serve alcohol can be liable for injuries caused by that intoxicated patron.  Liquor Liability Insurance is a way to protect your business against liability, and a way to make sure that legal bills are paid without affecting your bottom line (subject of course to the limits of the policy).  If your restaurant serves alcohol, liquor liability is an important part of your restaurant insurance considerations.

Assault and batter coverage is an important consideration in your liquor liability coverage.  Assault and battery could have a lower sub-limit, or it could be excluded altogether.  This is why you should discuss assault and battery coverage with an experienced agent like Hector, who you can reach at 713-979-5718.  Often you can request policies that do not exclude assault and battery coverage, or you can make sure that there is adequate coverage.

Property Coverage

A restaurant can insure its Business Personal Property, even if it does not own the building.

A restaurant should be mindful to cover its business personal property, its building, sign, and loss of income.  All of these can be covered in a Restaurant Insurance policy under the property portion.  Flood risks should be insured separately, and a Hector can help you to quote both at 713-979-5718.
